  • Call Me Anal!

    Design feedback intrigues me – sometimes it’s great, other times it keeps me awake at night.

    Why mention this? 

    Because customer satisfaction is everything.

    A client recently noted that the logo-mark wasn’t centred with the text in the stack version of their logo. While this was an intentional design choice (optical alignment subtly guides the eye), I scrutinised it and, after some thought, agreed it should be reviewed.

    I redesigned the logo stack, compared both versions and made the changes – willingly and free of charge. The result is even better.

    That’s how much your logo design means to me, and I hope it’s just as valuable to you.

    Q1. What do all concerts have in common? 

    A1. Speakers!

    Q2. What is the simplest way to depict and use a speaker in a logo?

    A2. Use the core elements of a speaker.

    The KB Concerts logo I designed captures the essence of live music by drawing inspiration from the core elements of a speaker – cone, surround, and dust cap. This dynamic design embodies flexibility and carries a deeper meaning and lasting impact.   • AI can’t think laterally.

    It doesn’t consider alternative perspectives, question or connect seemingly unrelated ideas, nor develop ideas into valuable visuals.

    But I do, and lateral thinking is at the heart of everything that’s good about design. It’s also one of my unique selling points, alongside being quick and highly skilled.

    Here’s an example of my lateral thinking…

    The Brief: Unity Electrical & Solar Services wanted a distinctive, professional brand logo for use in both physical and digital environments.

    My Thinking: What does every single electrical company have in common and how do you show this visually?

    My Answer: All electrical companies work with electricity, and the simplest way to visualise this is to use the energy usage graphic from a smart meter.

    My Solution: Combine the ‘U’ of Unity with the visual elements of smart meters, including their segmented structure and colours.

    Why it Works: As a brand logo, this design is visually memorable and gives an immediate indication of the industry it’s related to.

  • Staring at an eel

    Last week, I was staring at an eel through a snorkel mask.

    The eel was staring back at me.

    I told of what I’d seen, and someone made a wisecrack, asking, “I wonder if the eel has gone home and said, ‘I just saw Keith, the graphic designer!’”

    This got me thinking about appearances, or in business terms, branding.
